Maybelline Sky High Mascara... it is worth the hype?

So if you are like me, you got TikTok to tide you over through the multiple lockdowns we have been through over the past year. I'm not going to lie, it's great. You can scroll through that For You Page for hours and watch video after video and it feels as though it has been 5 minutes! Anyway, if you have TikTok you know that a popular theme of the app is trends. People see a TikTok or topic or dance and jump to make their own video on it.
One of the most recent trends has had not only makeup lovers like me lose their minds, but everyone lose their minds! The trend in question? Maybelline's Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara.

A sponsored video posted by TikTokker @jessica.eid_ which now has millions of views showed her applying the mascara and there is no doubt it looked amazing! Jessica stated it lengthened, thickened and made your lashes look amazing... what is not to love!? From there, the trend was alight! I've seen hundreds of video's that have duetted or stitched the original video from Jessica on my For You Page, the majority of them falling in love with this mascara.
I had to have it! However in true trend style, it was sold out everywhere and it wasn't until a couple of weeks later when I was doing a skincare haul on Boots that I managed to get my hands on it!
I have used Maybelline mascara for years! It's a drug store staple and the quality of mascara you get for the price you pay I honestly think is outstanding. I have been a die-hard lover of the Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara pretty much since it came out. I luckily have naturally long, full lashes and I love the way Lash Sensational makes them look longer while still making them look fluffy. With that being said I had really high hopes for the Sky High Mascara, especially as it is in the Lash Sensational strain.
So, what do I think?
Let's start with packaging... I love it! I think it is really sleek, stylish and good quality.
However, when it came to the actual wand on the brush I wasn't keen. The actual applicator part of the wand is slightly loose, which I assume is so it bends to your lash more which some people may really like however it wasn't for me. I was worried if it pushed it too hard it would break which I'm sure it wouldn't, but it was just not my cup of tea. Another thing I didn't like about the applicator was that it was straight which made it harder to apply to the lashes. This may be as I am used to the curve on the Lash Sensational wand, I like that it easily reaches more lashes at once and can get into the corners of my eye easier. The straight wand on the Sky High Mascara made it difficult to get into those nooks and crannies especially as it is also longer too. I also found I kept getting mascara on my eyelid from the applicator. Some people may love the wand as I think it is all personal preference but it just wasn't for me.
The actual mascara? On TikTok I saw people applying around 3 coats so I did the same to try and get a good evaluation of it. I also curled my lashes.
On the first coat, there is no doubt it makes your lashes appear longer. The formula is quite thin which is nice for application it doesn't feel sticky or clumpy and the colour is really black to make your lashes nice and bold. The only thing I didn't like was that I could see my lashes sticking together which make me not get the fluffier/wispier look I like for my lashes.
(please allow me for these pictures, it was early and the mascara on one eye thing did me dirty making me look like I have a lazy eye. I also have the worst resting bitch face in the world)

Coat 2: I was hoping that the more I wiggled the brush (very technical term, I know) that I could get that fluffier look it just wasn't happening for me and my lashes were just getting more stuck together.

Coat 3: You can definitely see the length in the lashes and the volume. They are still much more stuck together than I would like. Some people may like this look as it's all personal preference, but as I have said before I like mine to be a bit fluffier.

Final Verdict
There is no denying it, this mascara gives you length! Just look at how long it got my lashes! I love how dark it made my lashes too. I love the packaging and the formula, how light it feels on the lashes... but with that being said I just don't think its the right mascara for me. I think if you didn't curl your lashes, the mascara would not perform as well. I really didn't get on well with the wand for number of reasons including the shape and the fact it moved on application. Although the mascara gives you good length, I really dislike that it made my lashes so clumped together. It definitely didn't make my lashes as long and full as Jessica's on TikTok.
Again, I think it is totally personal preference, you may love this look for your lashes... but I don't think I will be swapping from my trusty Lash Sensational any time soon!
Let me know what you thought of the mascara over on my Instagram. I'd love to hear other people's thoughts!
